Nepal - the call of the mountains

This is an article specially written for Pleasant Living by Mr. Gopi Warrier.  Gopi is a noted writer-communicator; there's much more to share on him at http://gopi-warrier.blogspot.in.

The word ‘posh’ is said to have evolved from the expression “port out starboard home.” The well-heeled, leaving Britain for the colonies in Asia, asked for and got a port (the left side of a ship or aircraft) cabin on the way out and the starboard (the right) cabin on the way in. The view, they said, was better.

If you are flying in to Kathmandu from New Delhi, it pays to be ‘posh.’ You see the mountains from the window seat on the left while leaving from New Delhi and on the right from Kathmandu.

Like the pleats of a saree, the mountains fold into layers. From the vantage of an aircraft window at 35,000 feet, the white of the snow-capped ridges draw the boundary line. Before that are the multiple folds in greenish-black. And the streams and rivulets draining these folds join to form the mighty rivers flowing out of the mountains into the Gangetic basin.

When the cool monsoon clouds travel over the Indian peninsula to be accosted by the sentinels of the north, the mountains pull a white cotton quilt over themselves. Just the white of the heads of these sleeping giants are visible from your window.

Kathmandu is on a large patch of relatively flat land. You fly over ridges with farmhouses and farmlands, terraced fields in the valleys and forests over the slopes. When the monsoon clouds settle over this valley, enjoy the roller-coaster as you descend to land.

Nepal is an ancient country and a new democracy. A monarchy till May 2008, the country is going through the process of writing its Constitution. The political process is active and in Nepal you will feel this energy everywhere – the energy of new beginnings.

This energy juxtaposes interestingly with the easy pace of life in the country. The morning trip to the Pashupatinath temple, a brisk walk under the cool afternoon sun and an evening out in Thamel, life moves leisurely even in the busiest city of Kathmandu.

The land where Buddha was born, Nepal is a country that offers options for every tourist. You can travel to Lumbini to experience the place where prince Sidhartha Gautama was born, who later became Buddha, the enlightened one, or visit the temple dedicated to Lord Siva at Pasupatinath.

You can trek to the Everest Base Camp. And if you are a mountaineer, you can climb the peak itself, known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan.

You can travel through Nepal to Mansarovar and Mount Kailash in Tibet. And if you only want to see the snow-capped mountains, there are more than 240 peaks with height more than 20,000 feet in Nepal.

Nepal is suitable for every budget, offering accommodation from dormitories to five-star hotels. That is why you will see backpackers as well as the well-healed tourists in the country. Whatever be the budget, it pays to remember the ‘posh’ rule when flying to Nepal.
